About Me

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I have worked 10 years in the printing and graphic design industry which gave me extensive knowledge of graphic design software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. This spring I will complete my Masters of Education from the University of Houston. I also have a Bachelor of Fine Arts with emphasis in painting and a minor in art history. I have always loved the arts. My passion for the arts comes from my family. For example, my brother has a degree in music and my twin sister was a professional ballet dancer, so I grew up with a respect for the arts and how they benefit our culture and improve our lives.

I consider myself an educator and a professional artist. I exhibit my artwork locally and receive commissions to paint residential and commercial murals on weekends. I just completed five conference rooms for a Houston based company downtown. I have been asked how I manage to do everything that I do between school and work and still have time to paint.  My response is time management and having a passion for what I do.

Teaching Philosophy

My personal teaching philosophy starts with the belief that every child no matter what economic status, nationality, gender, or previous academic success should have an equal opportunity to grow and succeed in a positive learning environment. Art education has the opportunity to offer every student an increased positive attitude towards themselves, towards their environment, and towards their peers through creative expression. Creating a safe and positive environment students have a space to freely express themselves without fear of failure. A positive environment can foster an atmosphere that promotes problem solving and critical thinking skills through visual awareness and an atmosphere challenging a student’s perceptions.

Students learn best when provided a student centered learning approach. With student centered activities we increase a student’s intrinsic motivation and increase a student’s self awareness and empathy toward others.
